I am a runner and a pack rat. I am trying to overcome the latter, but that’s a different story. This website was inspired from websites such as PostSecret, Found and MailArt, where normal everyday people share their secrets, stuff and own creations on the web for others to see. So I started thinking about what I could do that would combine that with running and after a while it dawned on me… running bibs.
Runners in a race are reduced to a number in order to identified legimate runners on the course, a tyvek ID in case of emergency and it’s easier for the finish line volunteers to write down (or key in) ‘166′ then asking people their names. Now, I know that not all races hand out bibs, but I would venture that most do. Some bibs are big and fancy, decked out with logos, names and dates where as other bibs are recycled leftovers from a race.
Regardless of what condition of these bibs, they tell a story. And it is my hope to capture some of them and share them with the world. I would like to showcase running bibs from around the world, from the local low-key races to high profile races such as London or Boston.
But I don’t want it to be limited to just running events. I would love to have multisport events (triathlons, biathlons) even Olympic Competion! I probably would even post a bib from events such as the try-outs for American Idol.
And then my running buddy Steve over at Phedippidations suggested that I shouldn’t limit it to just bibs. He has a pair of shoes that would fit the theme of this website… so with if there is anything from a competition you would like to share, then I would like to hear about it! Even if it’s not an athletic endeavor, but there’s a story,I’ll take that too!
So here is what I would like to have (but not required):
[]The Running Bib (either a picture *.jpg file or mailed to me via postal service* so I can scan it) Any picture will do (which may include you), as long as the bib is clearly readable. If it’s not a bib, just a picture please or we can workout the shipping.
[]The Event Name
[]Type of Event and Distance(s)
[]Location of Event (City/State/Country)
[]Date of Event
[]Your Official Time
[]Was this a Personal Record (PR)?
[]Did you win an award?
[]A write up (or Race Report) with some details about the race. If you have a blog, you can submit the permalink to the race report
[]Whom would you like to credit (Your Full Name, abbreviated name, alias, anonymous)

Hey, I heard about this on Phedippidations and want to submit a bib picture and story to you in November. I will compete in my first Ironman Triahtlon- Steve read a letter from me on his pod cast #56- if you heard it, I am the Becky from Brandon Mississippi. I think this is pretty cool and I would love to share my bib picture and experience from IM Florida.
I’ll be in contact then! The event is Nov. 4th. Keep me in your prayers that day!
Thanks

I too heard about this blog on Phedippidations and I think that it is an awesome idea. I have finally convinced my family to do a race tommorow (my daughter age 11 and myself are doing a 5k and my wife and son age 8 are doing a 2k) and I can’t wait to send in our bibs along with our story.

I have not caught up on Steve’s podcasts, so did not hear about this site there…yet. But I did read your planet3rry blog and found out about it.
I would like to know about the bib numbered 27. It is the one for the “Run for the Deaf” from the Tennessee School for the Deaf. What length is that race? Is it run there on school campus? I work with the Deaf and had the privilege of being there on campus one time.
Are past race bibs fair game, or are you looking for new stories?

[...] Catch Me If You Can is a new site dedicated to racing bibs. Well, maybe not the bibs themselves, but the stories behind them. Terry, from the planet3rry blog, has set up this site so that runners can send pictures, scans or actual items from a race along with the race reports. He started out thinking just race numbers, but has very quickly expanded his criteria to pictures of shoes or something else that may be significant to the runner as it pertains to the race. [...]

This is a great idea. Like a few others, I heard about this on Phedippedations. I am training for my first marathon, the 2007 Disney World Marathon on January 7th, and I am looking forward to posting that race number and story.
Thanks for letting us all share…there is truly a story behind each one.
