Walt Disney World Marathon 2006
I got a finishers medal! I wasn’t sure I would get that when my left calf cramped at mile 6. I slowed down some and was able to finish the race.

Okinawa Marathon

This race meant a lot to me for several reasons:
1) I dedicated the race to my wife, Kaori;
2) the time was a PR time of 3:12:57;
3) the time was also a BQ (Boston Qualifying) time (3:20 was needed).

Midnattsloppet 10k – Stockholm Sweden – 07.2001

Midnattsloppet (Midnight Run) 10k in Stockholm, Sweden

This was the Midnattsloppet (Midnight Run) 10k in Stockholm, Sweden, in July 2001. It had been 12 years since I last ran in a race and I decided I needed a really cool race to motivate me to get back into running. This worked out well. Despite the name, the race started at 10 p.m., but it was huge, both in runners and fan support. The entire route was lined with cheering, screaming fans, including children, chanting something in Swedish, which I don’t speak a word of, but it didn’t matter. I think there were about 25,000 runners. That run through the streets of Stockholm that night was something I’ll always treasure. I still have the T-shirt, which cost extra, but there are no sponsor ads on it, just the race logo. Best of all, it did motivate me to get back into running, and five years later I’ve completed 6 marathons and a whole bunch of shorter races. The Midnattsloppet started it all.

Carrera Atletica 8k

This was my first road race. I had only started running in early January. Though I had gone out and run once every couple of weeks before January, I had not started running seriously until then.

I found out about this race about 4 days before it was to run. The announcement said to be there an hour early so that we could register. No one showed up to take registrations until 30 minutes before. I was there with a friend sitting on the curb wondering if there really was a race that day.

The race itself was non-spectacular other than it was a first for me. It was supposed to be an 8 Km race. Later I found out it was only 7.75 Km. Which is typical of races here. They are not too exact on the distance. I have run a 5K that was really 5.5. A 10K that was only 9.2. And worst of all was the 5K that was only 3.3 K.

I came in pretty much last. There was a 70 year old lady and a guy in a wheel chair that were behind me, but for all intents and purposes, I was the last one who was seriously running. And I ran, or shuffled, the whole way.

Brickfest 5k – Malvern AR – 06.24.2006

Brickfest 5k

The interesting thing about this race, for me, was the fact that I ran it, got my bottle of water and after-race fruit, and contemplated staying for the awards ceremony, which I never do. There were 121 participants. There was no way I could have won an award, I thought, regardless if there was 121 participants or 121,000. Plus, I needed to go and pick up my husband from the airport. He had been away on business. The ironic thing is that he works in the small town of Malvern. The next day I looked up the race results online. My jaw dropped when I saw my name as the fifth place winner for 30-34 females! It was my first hardware! And isn’t it clever — a brick for Brickfest! I am so very proud of my award!

I forgot to include one fact about the running shoes. That race was their final run. I retired those shoes that day with 415 miles on them. They were my first pair of “real” running shoes, “prescribed” for me by an expert at a running store after I suffered from a nasty, dark toenail. I have bought a new pair exactly the same!

110 Boston Marathon

Steve Runner was part of the 110th running of the Boston Marathon in April of 2006. He doesn’t have the normal race report to share because Steve is the host/producer of a running podcast called Phedippidations:

A PodCast for, and by runners: Thoughts, opinions, observations and rambling diatribes composed during distance long runs. Steve Runner is a mild mannered middle-of-the-pack distance runner who shares the output of his oxygen starved cranial stimulation with his audience while training for his next marathon. Phedippidations is a RunCast named after the legendary Greek messenger: Phedippides. A modern day messenger of sorts; Steve runs near his home in Central Massachusetts. Each show is dedicated to an aspect of running, covering topics such as: training, injury, gadgets, nutrition, strategies and Steve’s pathetic attempts at breaking four hours in the marathon.

Steve, in a series of podcasts, goes through his pre-race, race and post-race experiences of the marathon. Episode 40 of the podcast, tours the marathon course and details some of historical highlights of this high profile running event. Episodes 41 and 41b records Steve while running (he runs with a microphone and recorder) the event… everything from pre-race excitement to trying to put the train back on course and just cross the finish line. Post marathon memeories, recovery and analysis are covered in Episodes 42 and 43.

Steve Runner can be contacted via his podcast website www.steverunner.com.

NCAA 691

I found this bib on the sidewalk while running and I took it as a sign that I had to create this website. At the time, I was still kicking around the idea and I initally passed the bib on the ground, stopped and then ran back to get it. I have NO idea who or what school wore the bib. Which events? Or how they did? Who knows?

Why This Site

Filed under: admin — planet3rry @ 8:25 pm

I am a runner and a pack rat. I am trying to overcome the latter, but that’s a different story. This website was inspired from websites such as PostSecret, Found and MailArt, where normal everyday people share their secrets, stuff and own creations on the web for others to see. So I started thinking about what I could do that would combine that with running and after a while it dawned on me… running bibs.

Runners in a race are reduced to a number in order to identified legimate runners on the course, a tyvek ID in case of emergency and it’s easier for the finish line volunteers to write down (or key in) ‘166′ then asking people their names. Now, I know that not all races hand out bibs, but I would venture that most do. Some bibs are big and fancy, decked out with logos, names and dates where as other bibs are recycled leftovers from a race.

Regardless of what condition of these bibs, they tell a story. And it is my hope to capture some of them and share them with the world. I would like to showcase running bibs from around the world, from the local low-key races to high profile races such as London or Boston.

But I don’t want it to be limited to just running events. I would love to have multisport events (triathlons, biathlons) even Olympic Competion! I probably would even post a bib from events such as the try-outs for American Idol.

And then my running buddy Steve over at Phedippidations suggested that I shouldn’t limit it to just bibs. He has a pair of shoes that would fit the theme of this website… so with if there is anything from a competition you would like to share, then I would like to hear about it! Even if it’s not an athletic endeavor, but there’s a story,I’ll take that too!

So here is what I would like to have (but not required):
[]The Running Bib (either a picture *.jpg file or mailed to me via postal service* so I can scan it) Any picture will do (which may include you), as long as the bib is clearly readable. If it’s not a bib, just a picture please or we can workout the shipping.
